If you’re like most people, your home is your most important possession. As well as being a place of comfort, retreat and security, it’s also by far your biggest asset. The equity in your home can support you in comfort in later years, and if you have children, it may be a significant part of the inheritance you hope to leave them.

For all these reasons, its worth caring for the fabric of your home as well as you can. But one area that many people neglect is the roofline. That’s surprising in a way, because problems with the roofline can lead to serious water damage to a property – and addressing those problems might cost less than you think.

Other homeowners are tempted by a policy of ‘make do and mend’ when it comes to the roofline. Popular approaches include covering up ageing woodwork instead of replacing it, or painting the ends of fascia boards where they are starting to decay. Some people use friends or acquaintances for the work, or carry it out themselves.

But while out of sight might mean out of mind for the homeowner, this sort of patch-up job doesn’t address deep-seated problems around the roofline such as decaying boards, silt discharge from the roof or damp problems.

If your home was built after 1940, it’s unfortunately very likely that your roofline was constructed with un-dried timbers, made from poor-quality softwood, and unleaded paint. As a result, most rooflines require regular maintenance and repainting, usually around every four years. And with the increasing regulatory requirement for proper access equipment such as scaffolding towers, the cost of that maintenance can only increase over time.

Sometimes, properties built too close together can make access to the roofline more difficult, which – along with cost concerns – tempts homeowners to defer their repairs. But that just leads to more problems further down the line.

The desire to save money by patching up the roofline, instead of replacing it, is entirely understandable. Many of our own customers felt that way. But they found that, while they could put off replacing the roofline for a few years, the problem didn’t go away. So they ended up spending twice over: once to do the job cheaply, and again to do it properly. From a long-term perspective, running repairs to an ageing roofline are a false economy.

In contrast, replacing the roofline in its entirety – fitting new gutters, fascia boards and soffits made from durable, high-quality UPVC – does away with the need for running repairs. Modern UPVC fascia boards and soffits need no maintenance whatsoever, and can last for two decades or more. And choosing an expert, professional roofline provider gives you the reassurance that you’re getting the best product, fitted in the best way – with new under felt, bird stop materials and proper ventilation installed. Everything will be stripped out, renewed and made good from scratch.

In other words, you really can ‘fit it and forget it’ – invest in a new roofline now, and reap the benefits in savings, peace of mind and an attractive, well-maintained property for years to come.

Why not transform the look of your whole roofline replacement by combining your new cladding with Clear Vision (Peterborough) fascia boards, soffit boards, downpipes and guttering?

Here we will look at some of the most frequent questions our Peterborough customers have regarding fascias, soffits and bargeboards. If you are thinking of replacing your fascias and soffits, and would like a quote or just a chat, please use our contact form.

Are Fascia Boards and Bargeboards the same?

Fascia boards are usually located behind the guttering and are always horizontal whereas a bargeboard is typically located on an apex gable end, otherwise the two are very similar.

Can I cap over the old fascia boards?

You should only really consider capping over the old fascia boards if they are in very good condition and dry. Capping over rotten fascia boards will speed up the rotting process. Clearvision Peterborough recommend replacing your old fascias.

What thickness fascia board do you recommend?

We recommend replacing your fascias with boards of 16mm, 18mm or 20mm. If you are capping over old fascias (which are in good dry condition) then you can use a 10mm fascia board. These thicknesses are necessary because fascias are load bearing and hold the weight of the roof tiles. Soffits however are not load bearing and usually come in 10mm as standard.

Why do some fascia installations have rusty marks?

This happens when a roofline installer uses normal nails as this results in the fixings becoming rusty. We only use high quality stainless steel fixings with colour-matched heads to ensure that your soffits and fascias are fixed securely and maintain a clean appearance.

Can you colour-match my fascias and soffits to my windows?

Generally soffits and fascias are manufactured to a universal colour scheme and come in many variations of woodgrain, mahogany, golden oak and rosewood etc. There are also white variations such as ice white and cream white. If you would like us to show you some samples for colour matching purposes, please contact us.

Rainwater leaking from guttering may cause serious structural deterioration and unhealthy mould problems. By keeping roof gutters and downpipes maintained will extend the life of your guttering and will also prevent water damage. It is recommended that roof gutters are inspected and cleaned at least once a year, normally during the autumn months. Without appropriate maintenance, damp and decay caused by blocked, sagging and damaged guttering, can lead to expensive repair bills. Regular maintenance could prevent the need to spend hundreds or even thousands of pounds at a later date, dealing with a serious damp problem such as dry rot.

Composite doors – you may be familiar with the term but what exactly is a Composite Door? More importantly, why are these next generation doors superior to traditional timber, UPVC and aluminium doors?

Composite Doors take their name from the composite materials that make up the inside of the door. There are slight variations available, but most high quality composite doors comprise of a timber hardwood sub-frame that houses the composite material. The doors are typically hung in a UPVC steel reinforced frame.

The composite material inside is usually high-density foam such as polyurethane, which once inserted forms a hard solid core. This is a far cry from the almost weightless Styrofoam that makes up a UPVC panel. It is the high-density core of a composite door that gives the door its notable strength. Anyone who has tried to carry a composite door will testify to this; weighing approximately 75KG it is easy to see why these doors are generally considered impossible to break into! The standard thickness for a Composite door slab is 44mm, almost twice the thickness of a UPVC panel. Many customer surveys have indicated that after replacing a UPVC front door with a Composite there were notable reductions in heat loss and noise from outside was greatly reduced. The face of a Composite Door is usually a 3mm thick skin made up of GRP, UPVC or aluminium.

Composite Doors with an aluminium face are waning in popularity and availability, as they are notoriously bad conductors. Composites with UPVC skins are also less popular as the skin is susceptible to the same downfalls as UPVC doors; warping under extreme weather conditions and also colour fade in direct sunlight.

The majority of notable Composite door manufacturers now use a GRP skin on either side of the door. GRP skins are available in a variety of colours, and importantly GRP is not known to fade or discolour in direct sunlight as UPVC does. GRP skins can boast a traditional timber grain effect, giving the appearance of real wood. This proves to be a big selling point for Composite doors, as they are a lot more resistant to weathering and age than wooden doors. GRP skins can be sprayed, however it is preferable to source a GRP skin that has a through-colour applied. This means the colour is applied at the time of manufacture, resulting in the colour running right the way through the skin. This eliminates any paint flaking or cracking, and means that a deep scratch on the face of the door should be easily remedied with a touch up pen.
